Multiple aspects of your health are dependent on each other.
Understanding and being mindful of each aspect in your life, can help you stay healthy and happy.
Six dimensions of wellness
As defined in National Wellness Institute self-assessment tool/worksheet, 2022
Emotional wellness includes the degree to which one feels positive and enthusiastic about oneself and life. In this
dimension, it is important to be aware of and accept one’s feelings & take an optimistic approach to life.
Occupational wellness refers to satisfaction in one’s work. In this dimension, it is important to seek out a career which is consistent with one’s personal values, interests, and beliefs. Individuals are encouraged to develop functional, transferable skills through structured involvement opportunities, and to remain active and involved.
Physical wellness puts focus and emphasis on movement, fitness, sleep, relaxation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,
including the consumption of foods and beverages that enhance rather than impair good health.
Social wellness includes making contributions to the common welfare of one’s community and thinking of others. In
this dimension, it is important to live in harmony with others and the environment.
Intellectual wellness is defined as life-long learning. In this dimension, it is important to stretch one’s thinking and
challenge one’s mind in both intellectual and creative pursuits, in addition to Identifying potential problems and
choosing appropriate courses of action based on available information.
Spiritual wellness recognizes one’s search for meaning and purpose in human existence. In this dimension, it is
important to be true to oneself, live each day in a way that is consistent with one’s values and beliefs, go beyond faith
and religion to ponder the meaning of life, and be tolerant of the beliefs of others.
Although not listed by NWI, many health professionals feel that Financial Wellness should also be acknowledged and addressed.
Difficulties with your finances can cause a lot of stress.
Stress management
How it can affect other aspects of your health
Stress may be traditionally thought of as emotional health, but can begin as mental or physical, and then manifest into another aspect of your well-being.
Science of it
Research suggests that chronic high levels of cortisol contribute to high blood pressure, promote the formation of artery-clogging deposits, and cause brain changes.
Just as there are multiple facets to your life, there will be numerous ways to incorporate this knowledge into your daily health.
Great stories are for everyone even when only written for just one person. If you try to write with a wide, general audience in mind, your story will sound fake and lack emotion. No one will be interested. Write for one person. If it’s genuine for the one, it’s genuine for the rest.
